Hypertension may result from overactivity of one or more components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Raised blood pressure may be associated with the excessive secretion of aldosterone due either to an adrenocortical abnormality (thus termed primary hyperaldosteronism) or secondary to the excessive secretion of renin (as in renovascular or renal parenchymatous disease). The latter is referred to as secondary hyperaldosteronism.
